Epson, a Japanese electronics company, started developing smart glasses in 2011. The company's first smart glasses, Moverio BT-100, were released in November 2011. Since then, Epson has continued developing and releasing several new smart glasses models. The latest edition of Moverio BT-45C sets a new standard of use for industrial applications and is great for remote assistance during work in the field.
The Epson Moverio BT-45C is the latest addition to Epson's lineup of smart glasses. They were announced in January 2022 and are an updated version of the Moverio BT-35E, built for a workforce out in the field. Since February 2023 XMReality has been compatible with the new Epson Moverio model. Our application specialist Filip Micklin has tested the product version with the included controller BT-45CS. Read his experience and what you need to know about the Epson smart glasses.
The big see-through display is the first thing you notice when you put on the Epson smart glasses. The new Moverio features a 34° field-of-view with new Si-OLED technology. This gives the user a big screen with a clear image, making it possible and easy to get a good overview and focus on smaller details in the image. This is unique for a see-through display. However, it takes some time to get used to this experience, but it works well when you get comfortable with this way of working, as the screen is very responsive with minimal delay.
An included controller with a touchpad controls the headset. The controller can be used as a phone or in “trackpad mode.” When put in trackpad mode, you swipe on the screen to move a cursor visible in the glasses and can click in the interface just like you would when using your computer. The controller enables easy and intuitive control without a bulky and non-optimized phone or having to use voice commands, so you can work efficiently with the capability of pocketing it and getting a hands-free experience when performing a task.
The headset is a bit heavier but is designed with good weight distribution and balance, making it comfortable for the most common use cases. To put them on for a specific task, the clarity of display, ease of use, and responsiveness make the Epson Moverio BT-45C an exciting and good option for companies purchasing AR smart glasses. We really like this latest model update from Epson and think that they are a great option to use together with XMReality remote visual assistance.
